Erasure
VIDEO TUTORIAL: Coming soon here...
What is Erasure?
Erasure is a maxforlive spectral subtraction effect. It listens to the spectral content of another channel and uses that as a blueprint to subtract spectral content from the incoming signal. Simply place Erasure on the channel you'd like to subtract, then select the subtraction source.
What can I use it for?
This device is essentially a remix of a very old device known as Kn0ck0ut, popular among DIY acapella creators. The idea is that you place this device on an original track and use the instrumental track as the subtraction blueprint. The vocals are all that remains. But it can be used for mixdown as well, almost like a spectral sidechain compression where you're only really removing the frequencies that conflict. But I think it sounds the best as a creative effect where the subtracted sound almost dissolves into nothing when a different sound plays. Subtract vocals from your synth chords to make them dissolve the chords away when your vocals come in. Layer multiple sounds and have each one dissolving another.
